【ANN NEWS, IRVINE】Hoag announced the official opening of the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus in Irvine, California. The major $1 billion expansion adds six buildings and brings together specialty services in cancer care, women’s health, digestive health and advanced surgery, further expanding Hoag’s healthcare services in Orange County.

The expansion adds 155 inpatient beds, bringing Hoag Hospital Irvine’s total bed count to 251. It also adds 11 operating rooms, two procedure rooms and 120,000 square feet of outpatient facilities.

Notably, the new campus is named after major donors Diana Sun and David Sun. The couple donated $100 million to the expansion project, becoming one of the key philanthropic forces supporting the development of the new campus.

Six New Buildings Bring Together Multiple Specialty Services

Hoag said the new campus follows a “medical village” concept, bringing specialty hospitals, outpatient services, surgical care and other medical resources together on a single campus, with the aim of providing patients with more coordinated care from diagnosis and treatment through recovery.

Hoag President and CEO Robert T. Braithwaite said the expansion not only adds multiple medical facilities, but also reflects Hoag’s continued efforts to expand services as Orange County’s population and healthcare needs grow.

Hoag Hospital Irvine opened in 2010. With the Sun Family Campus now in operation, the hospital has further expanded its specialty services, with a focus on women’s health, cancer care, digestive health and advanced surgery, while integrating them with its existing emergency, inpatient and orthopedic services.

Women’s Health: 24 Labor and Delivery Rooms, 17-Bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The new women’s hospital and women’s outpatient building provide services covering pregnancy and childbirth, breast health, gynecology, menopause and wellness management.

The women’s hospital features 24 private labor and delivery rooms for labor, delivery and postpartum care. It also includes a 24-hour obstetric emergency department and a 17-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The adjacent women’s outpatient building provides breast health services, maternal-fetal medicine diagnostics, obstetrics and gynecology, midwifery, medical imaging and wellness management.

Orange County’s First Acute Care Center Dedicated to Cancer Patients

Cancer care is also a major focus of the expansion.

The new campus’s cancer outpatient building brings together oncology specialists, infusion therapy, medical imaging, pharmacy services and related support services. The adjacent cancer hospital building includes dedicated inpatient units for cancer patients.

The campus also features Orange County’s first acute care center specifically designed for cancer patients, providing evaluation and treatment for cancer-related symptoms and side effects from treatment. Hoag said the service is also available to patients who are not receiving their primary cancer treatment at the hospital.

Digestive Health Services Integrate Outpatient and Inpatient Care

The new digestive health facilities bring specialty consultations, examinations, interventional treatments and inpatient care together on the same campus.

The digestive health outpatient building includes six specialty procedure rooms offering care for digestive disorders and interventional pulmonary services, along with minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment equipment. The adjacent inpatient building features dedicated patient units and specialty care teams for patients requiring hospitalization.

Eight Advanced Operating Rooms Expand Capacity for Complex Procedures

The new surgical building features eight advanced operating rooms, including a hybrid operating room for complex cardiovascular and vascular procedures, as well as equipment for robot-assisted and minimally invasive surgery.

The building also includes preoperative areas, postoperative recovery areas and an intensive care unit, allowing patients to receive preoperative preparation, surgery, postoperative recovery and critical care within the same healthcare system.

Sun Family Donates $100 Million to Support Expansion

Philanthropic donations are one of the major funding sources for the $1 billion expansion project.

Hoag said thousands of community donors and partners supported the development of the new campus. Among them, Diana Sun and David Sun donated $100 million, leading the new campus to be named the “Sun Family Campus.”

In addition, longtime Hoag supporters Benjamin Du and Carmela Du donated $25 million to support construction of the Du Family Hospital Pavilion.

Hoag Hospital Foundation President Caroline A. Pereira said philanthropic funding enables the hospital to accelerate medical innovation and the development of new services, and that the Irvine campus expansion is also the result of the community’s long-term investment in healthcare infrastructure.

With the Sun Family Campus now officially in operation, Hoag Hospital Irvine’s total bed count has increased to 251. Building on its existing 24-hour emergency care, inpatient services and orthopedic care through Hoag Orthopedic Institute, the hospital has further expanded its specialty care services for residents of Irvine and Orange County.
