【ANN NEWS, LOS ANGELES】 Long David Liu, the Republican candidate for California’s 49th State Assembly District, said he recently clashed with some protesters while attending an event in support of California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton. Liu said his campaign sign was grabbed and damaged and that someone spat at him. Following the incident, Liu contacted police and posted details about what happened on social media.
According to 2026 election information published by the California Secretary of State, Liu is running as a Republican for California’s 49th State Assembly District and lists his occupation as an attorney. The other candidate advancing to the November general election in the district is incumbent Democratic Assemblymember Mike Fong.

Liu said he was holding a campaign sign at the event when some protesters began verbally confronting him, and the confrontation subsequently escalated. He said his campaign sign was grabbed and damaged and that someone spat at him. Liu then called 911, and police arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
Liu later described the incident humorously, saying he had taken the “bullet” for Steve Hilton before Hilton arrived, and joked that Hilton therefore “owes him a beer.”
Regarding the incident, Liu said that regardless of differences in political views, people should express their opinions through lawful and peaceful means and should not resort to personal attacks or damaging other people’s property. He also reiterated that public safety and fighting crime are among the main issues of his campaign. Liu’s previously filed official candidate statement also lists public safety as a campaign priority.
After the incident became public, Liu posted photos from the scene and details of what happened on social media. Several Chinese American community and political figures in Southern California expressed support for Liu.

San Gabriel Mayor Eric L. Chan responded under the post, “Well, THIS happened ”. The campaign account of Herb Morgan, who is running for California State Controller, commented: “We are all behind you David. Stay safe.”(We all support you, David. Stay safe.)
In addition, Eric Ching, the Republican candidate for California’s 31st Congressional District, expressed support for Liu and emphasized that political disagreements should not escalate into violence or acts of property damage.
