【ANN NEWS, WASHINGTON】 As artificial intelligence advances rapidly, U.S. President Donald Trump and several technology industry leaders have shown clear differences over the pace of AI development. Trump argues that the United States must accelerate AI development and maintain its global competitive advantage, while several AI company executives have called for an appropriate slowdown to allow more time for safety measures.

Trump recently said he disagreed with suggestions that AI companies should slow development. He later wrote on Truth Social that the United States already has significant regulatory power over these companies and linked the AI competition to China, emphasizing that “whoever wins AI, wins.” The Trump administration has also repeatedly made maintaining U.S. leadership in AI a policy priority.

Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently publicly called on the AI industry to moderately slow the pace at which frontier models gain new capabilities, allowing safety research and safeguards to keep pace with technological development. He warned that as AI becomes increasingly involved in developing the next generation of AI systems, technological progress could outpace humans’ ability to understand and control those systems.

The proposal quickly received support from technology leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Altman supported introducing an independent safety evaluation mechanism, while Musk also publicly expressed agreement with Amodei’s position.

AI safety concerns have also drawn attention in the U.S. Congress. Lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties have raised the need for stronger AI safety regulation, seeking to establish corresponding safeguards while supporting continued U.S. technological leadership.

Separately, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are reportedly discussing the establishment of a new industry safety mechanism to develop common standards for the rapidly evolving AI sector. As AI capabilities continue to advance, how to strike a balance between global technological competition and potential safety risks is becoming an important issue facing the U.S. government, Congress and the technology industry.
